Located west of Philadelphia, near Coatesville, PA this residence sits on a hill overlooking Buck Run creek. The property is surrounded by farms, woodlands, tributaries and preserves. A renovated log cabin, new residence, pool house and garage create a cluster of structures connected by a series of stone patios, walkways and gardens. Linear gardens showcasing distinct native plant communities of this region cut through a sequence of independent, connected structures to create a link between open, native meadows and the creek.
A series of locally-sourced limestone patios from large to small connect the house to the creek and create an interconnected, terraced landscape that accommodates a range of gathering, outdoor eating and event spaces. Traditional dry stacked stone walls help situate the house in the larger rolling landscape. The project restores 130,000 sf of native prairie and integrates a series of rain gardens into the landscape to filter and infiltrate stormwater moving towards the creek.
