26TH AVENUE NORTH OVERLOOK

An overlook perched above the Mississippi River, offering panoramic views and a playful community destination long absent from the site.

  • Perched above the shoreline with views of downtown and upriver, this riverfront amenity offers neighbors, bikers, and tourists a space to see, sense, and occupy the river’s edge. Through several strategic design moves such as a 50’ tall beacon, an overlook with playful seating elements, a gathering space, native planting, and shoreline restoration, the project provides a highly visible destination that draws and welcomes the community to this place for the first time in over half a century.

  • The design approach tapped into the dynamics of the Mississippi River - its power, flows, habitats, mist, and ice - and created a place that feeds and draws from the vibrancy of the North Minneapolis community itself.  The design concept was developed through a collaborative co-creation process with neighborhood youth, artists, and designers. Elements such as a 35’ tall Beacon, a playful net feature, a circular bench for views both up and down the river, youth-designed artwork embedded in the railing, an informal gathering space, native planting, and shoreline restoration emerged as priorities for the Overlook.

  • The Beacon is a visual marker that draws people to the river through the loud, vast swath of infrastructure and industry that separates the heart of the North Minneapolis neighborhoods from the Mississippi. The tall, slender spire was designed to be visible from Farview Park on 26th Avenue N and a clear invitation to the Northside that “this river is yours, too”. The Overlook itself is an infinity loop designed to create an experience that operates not as a terminus but as a continuum that also pulls people back into the neighborhood. Integrated into the Overlook railing is a 26’ long perforated metal mural, designed by JXTA youth apprentices, that tells the story of the Upper Riverfront, from pre-settlement as Dakota Homeland to its imagined future--through their eyes and lived experience.

The Beacon and Overlook railing also include a programmable lighting system that allows the color and ambiance to change to acknowledge culturally significant dates, or to be dimmed during bird migration periods. The gathering lawn next to the Overlook is framed by the pathway connecting the greenway trail to the Overlook. The lawn is flanked by native plant gardens. In collaboration with the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO), the shoreline and bluff edge below the Overlook were bio-engineered to stabilize the slope and enhance shoreline habitat with native species.
